Meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan with the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation
On 4 May 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the Special Representative of the United States of America for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmai Khalilzod.
At the meeting, the issues of bilateral relations, regional and multilateral cooperation were discussed. Furthermore, the sides considered various aspects of the current situation in Afghanistan, in particular the process of inter-Afghan peace talks, preparation of holding an important peace Conference in Istanbul, the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and topical regional and global issues.
Moreover, S. Muhriddin emphasised that Tajikistan supports the position of the Government of Afghanistan and international community in ensuring security, peace and stability in that country.
While discussing bilateral relations in a multilateral format, the sides expressed satisfaction with the cooperation and coordination of positions within the framework of international organizations, in particular the UN, as well as the fight against terrorism and extremism.
In this regard, the sides noted the need to strengthen cooperation in the joint fight against modern threats and challenges, including terrorism, extremism, illicit drug trafficking and other transnational organized crime.
During the meeting the views were also exchanged on the importance of further pursuing issues of development and expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the USA.
